The largest man-made structure on the C&O canal. Located near milepost 155.2 this large tunnel help eliminate six miles of canal and helped to open up economic success for Cumberland, Maryland. Taking over six million brick and over $600,000 to construct over fourteen years, the tunnel is over three thousand feet long and has become a prominent hiking and biking location. Inside the tunnel are many brass plates with the history of the tunnel inscribed on them. Guests are encouraged to bring a flashlight with them.
